The sign on the door at 4300 Wilson Blvd reads "Bagels. Not sandwiches." That sign belongs to PopUp Bagels. The Connecticut chain is scheduled to hold its Ballston grand opening tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 6, from 7 to 11 a.m. When ARLnow reported the date on Oct. 29, the shop was still waiting on a final county inspection.
Those three words on the door also sum up how Ballston's breakfast changed this year. Local coverage has called it the "Ballston bagel battle," and you can see why. Two bagel shops have opened since July, and a third is a day away, all within about a mile of each other. Look at what each one sells, when it opens and how you order, though, and the overlap gets small. Each shop serves a different kind of morning.
From zero to three in four months
For a while there was nothing. The Bruegger's Bagels at 818 N. Quincy St. closed in April 2023, and its farewell sign thanked customers going back to 1986. In its story on the closure, ARLnow pointed bagel seekers to Brooklyn Bagel in Courthouse. Then the gap filled quickly:
- July 7, 2026: Call Your Mother opens at 4000 Wilson Blvd.
- July 28, 2026: Bagel Uprising opens at 901 N. Glebe Road.
- Nov. 6, 2026: PopUp Bagels is scheduled to open at 4300 Wilson Blvd, between the other two.
The owners have been saying the same thing about their differences since spring. In an April ARLnow report, PopUp's regional partner Brian Harrington said, "We're ultimately a different type of bagel experience." In the same story, Bagel Uprising co-owner Chad Breckinridge said Ballston had "gone from zero bagel shops to real choice almost overnight, and that's a win for bagel lovers." The menus back them up.
The early, loaded sandwich at 4000 Wilson
Call Your Mother is the one built around sandwiches. The menu has bagels and schmear, but its best-known items are stacked breakfast and lunch sandwiches with names like the Bacon Sun City, Royal Palm and Jetski. Coffee, pastries and chocolate babka muffins fill out the counter.
It also opens earliest. The Ballston location page lists 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekdays and 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. You can order online for pickup. That helps, because on opening day ARLnow reported lines out the door at both the morning and lunch rush.
Longtime Ballston residents will know the address. It was most recently a Starbucks, and before that it held LebTav and Taylor Gourmet. Co-founders Daniela Moreira and Andrew Dana started at D.C. farmers markets and opened their Park View flagship in fall 2018. Before the July opening, Moreira told ARLnow she looked forward to serving Ballston seven days a week. The menu doesn't list prices online and tells customers to check with the shop.
If you want a big, assembled breakfast, or an early start before a commute from Ballston-MU station, this is the 6:30 a.m. option.
The everyday price at 901 N. Glebe
Bagel Uprising also makes sandwiches, so it overlaps with Call Your Mother more than with PopUp. Where it differs is price and how simple the menu is. On its online ordering page, a build-your-own bagel costs $1.75 and an egg-and-cheese bagel runs $6.50 to $9.25. The Breakfast Spud, an egg, ham, hash brown and cheese sandwich, costs $9.75. A plain bagel for less than two dollars is something you can buy every day, and Breckinridge said in April that the shop aims for "prices that fit into your daily routine."
He and co-owner Justin Silverman, an Air Force veteran, run what Breckinridge calls a veteran-owned, owner-operated small business that makes small-batch bagels from scratch every day. Ballston is their second shop, after the original in Del Ray. In its opening-day story, ARLnow quoted Breckinridge saying a simple menu helps the shop stay consistent and keep prices down. The menu also has a Reuben and babka. The shop sits on the corner of Fairfax Drive and N. Vermont Street. Its location page lists 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, and it offers pickup and delivery.
Of the three, this is the only one with a vote count behind it. In ARLnow's 2026 Readers' Choice poll, held Sept. 3 to 16, Bagel Uprising won Best New Restaurant in Arlington with 194 of 745 votes, about 26 percent. That vote covered every new restaurant in the county, not just bagel shops.
The bag to share at 4300 Wilson
PopUp Bagels is the one that sells something different. It makes no sandwiches at all. Bagels come out of the oven whole and hot, and you tear off pieces and dip them in a tub of schmear. The company calls it "rip and dip." You can only buy them by the bag. A bag starts at $15 for three bagels and a tub of cream cheese or butter, and the schmear flavors rotate weekly. Bags come in 3, 6, 12 or 30, and the menu adds smoked salmon and drinks.
A $15 minimum and a 30-bagel bag point to a different purpose. This is breakfast for the office, the weekend house guests or the team, not a solo morning coffee stop. The company's site says you can walk in or preorder. Preorders stay open until the day's batch sells out, and the company's About page says its lines "move fast."
Founder Adam Goldberg started PopUp in Westport, Connecticut, in 2020. Ballston is its first Virginia location, after shops in Georgetown and Bethesda, and it is taking over the old Which Wich storefront. Harrington told ARLnow the neighborhood drew the company because of its "strong mix of residents, daytime workers, and food lovers." He also promised "some localized touches paying homage to the neighborhood." The company plans up to 20 D.C.-area locations over the next few years.
Matching the shop to the morning
Here are the three side by side, using what each business posts as of this week:
| Call Your Mother | Bagel Uprising | PopUp Bagels | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address | 4000 Wilson Blvd | 901 N. Glebe Rd | 4300 Wilson Blvd |
| Opened | July 7, 2026 | July 28, 2026 | Scheduled Nov. 6, 2026 |
| Format | Stacked sandwiches, bagels, pastries | Simple bagels and sandwiches | Whole bagels with dipping schmear, no sandwiches |
| Posted hours | 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m. weekdays, 6:30 a.m.–3 p.m. weekends | 7 a.m.–2 p.m. daily | Not yet posted |
| Price point | Not listed online | $1.75 bagel, $9.75 Breakfast Spud | From $15 for three plus schmear |
| Ordering | Walk-up, online pickup | Walk-up, pickup, delivery | Walk-in, preorder until sellout |
Laid out this way, the shops mostly serve different needs: an early, filling sandwich at Call Your Mother, an inexpensive daily bagel at Bagel Uprising, and a bag of hot bagels to share from PopUp. Even Call Your Mother's Andrew Dana told ARLnow in April that he welcomed more bagel options in Ballston.
Friday's opening, and the weeks after
If you plan to go tomorrow, PopUp's grand opening runs 7 to 11 a.m. The company has announced "special surprises" and a limited-time Cafe Salted Caramel Cider Doughnut Schmear made with Good Company Doughnuts. The final inspection was still pending as of Oct. 29, so check PopUp's Ballston location page before you head over. Regular weekly hours should appear there once they're set.
The two posted schedules both end by 3 p.m., so plan on mornings. If you want a PopUp bag for a group, keep in mind that preorders close once the day's batch sells out.
Knowing which counter opens at 6:30 a.m. is the kind of block-by-block detail we follow across Arlington. If you're weighing a move within Ballston, or just want a local read on the corridor between Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard, Cox & Cox Group is glad to talk it through over a bagel from any of the three.
